After travelling for almost 24 hours, I finally arrived at my homestay in Plettenberg Bay at 6pm last night. I've had a long and very needed sleep (and another nap this morning) and I'm feeling refreshed already! Today I'm having a lovely relax at the homestay so tomorrow I should be as good as new! I'm sure the travelling will be worth it after an incredible couple of months ahead.

Travels to Plettenberg Bay

I started at Birmingham Airport, where I travelled to Frankfurt. The flight took less than 2 hours, but I didn't think about the time zones when I booked my flight, so what I thought would be an hour and a half wait before I needed to board my next flight to Johannesburg was actually half an hour! I made it though, even with time to spare to buy some snacks!

Next was Frankfurt to Johannesburg - a 10 and a half hour overnight flight (fun fun fun!) I ate my snacks on the plane while watching Orange is the New Black feeling very content with my new travel pillow and plane blanket, then got ready for bed and settled for a good kip. Then, I heard a voice asking everyone "Chicken or pasta?" so I got an unexpected warm meal and dessert at midnight too - what a bonus! On top of all this, a breakfast omelette (plus extras) was served at 7am. Let's just say I was not complaining!

The next flight from Johannesburg was such a cool experience! The plane was the tiniest plane I've ever been on. It seated 12 people and we could see the pilots and all their controls from where we were sitting. All I did for the first hour was take pictures and videos and just marvel at how amazing it was (it was also slightly scary thinking I was up in the air in this tiny, rickety machine, but I tried not to think about that too much). The weather was awful when we arrived over Plettenberg Bay and the pilots said they couldn't actually see the runway so decided it was safest for us all to land at George Airport instead. We then got a minibus back to Plettenberg Bay Airport so travelling was a little longer than expected, but at least I can now say I've been to George!

Here are some photos of my super cool plane ride!

I'm excited (and a little scared but mostly excited!) for the trip ahead. So far Plettenberg Bay seems to be a beautiful little spot. It's winter here at the moment so quite cold but luckily I've brought lots of clothes to layer myself up and they have plenty of fleecy blankets here at the homestay. Apparently this is typical weather for August, so thankfully this month is nearly over and the weather should warm up soon!

I'll start my work with SAASA within the next couple of days. I've already been sent my first project brief and I can't wait to get started!

Leave a comment or get in touch - I'd love to know if there's anything else you'd like to see on my website about my South Africa trip.
